R.E.S.P.E.C.T. .... Get some Respect Sextet at Bop Shop Atrium on May 1st

Respect Sextet photoThe Respect Sextet is coming back to Rochester to the Bop Shop Atrium on Friday, May 1, at 8:00 pm, brought to you by Bop Arts, Inc.

Formed in 2001, The Respect Sextet is a well known ensemble in these parts, comprised of Josh Rutner (reeds, radio, toys), Eli Asher (trumpet, toys), James Hirschfeld (trombone, toys), Malcolm Kirby (bass), Red Wierenga (piano, keyboard, accordion) and Ted Poor (drums). They put together a wild melange of improvisational music in programs combining free improvisation, original compositions, free jazz classics, television commercial jingles, text pieces, jazz standards, game pieces and more into what Exclaim! Magazine once called "a whirling collage." Check out some of their music on the Respect Sextet MySpace page.

It's Friday, so let's do some exploring ... Take Five jazz links

TakeFiveFriday logoTwo weeks in a row! Now that's progress. I've looked through my jazz feeds and found five new links for you to check out. Without any further adoo...

  • Harvard Business School's take on Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. In a business case, HBS professor Robert D. Austin and Carl Størmer highlight the takeaways for thoughtful managers and executives from the story of the creation and innovation on this seminal album.
  • A live recording on NPR of Tom Harrell Quintet at the Village Vanguard.
  • Credit to local trumpeter Mike Kaupa for passing around this video of Ernestine Anderson singing Moanin'. As Mike wrote, "Ernestine is an angel, but the organ player plays for the other team."
  • If you are having trouble finding the chords for that song you're trying to learn, check out SeventhString's Fake Book Index.
  • I recently ran across Jazz Studies Online, which "aims to broaden thinking about jazz," selecting "a wide range of digital resources—journal articles, book chapters, magazines, teaching materials, talks, internet links, and performances—to represent the diversity and innovation in jazz studies.

So take five and explore. Let me know what you think in the comments ....There will be five more next week.

Make a "Person to Person" call on Exodus to Jazz

On Friday, April 24th at 8:00 pm, the Exodus to Jazz series returns with "Person to Person," with Eric Person & Meta Four with special guest Houston Person. Saxophonist Eric Person was at ETJ in September 2007, showcasing his creative writing and chops on the instrument. He will be joined by his father Houston Person, who is considered by many the natural heir to the "Boss Tenor" crown with a style in the tradition of Gene Ammons or Stanley Turrentine.

The sets will start at the Radisson Riverside Hotel at 8:00 pm and will include two 1-hour sets. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Reserved seats are $25.00, general admission $20.00.

The return of Take Five Friday

TakeFiveFriday logoClearly, I've been having trouble keeping up my end of the bargain, but I'd like to continue this series of posts as I'm always coming across jazz-related links that I'd like to share. Here are five more... so Take Five.

  • Baseball and nonsequitur king Yogi Berra knew all about jazz. I recently ran across him explaining jazz in an interview. Here's a taste:
I can't, but I will. Ninety percent of all jazz is half improvisation. The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the wrong part, its right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong.
    Read the rest on AllAboutJazz.com.
  • I don't know about you, but I spent a lot of time in my early youth (and later when my sister was growing up) watching this guy in a cardigan go to the "Land of Make Believe" and sing songs while talking to puppets. Holly Yarbrough's Mister Rogers Swings! has recast all your favorite songs from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood's as swinging, jazzy, uptempo covers. You can get a taste at Boing Boing where I got the tip (well in a podcast linked to from there).
  • Geoffrey Keezer, pianist and recent collaborator with Joe Locke (last time I saw him was here at Water Street in support of their great album The Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group - Live In Seattle) has really taken to blogging and other things social media. I've enjoyed reading his posts at Streaming News from Keezer's Brain. He's also on Twitter.
  • One of the great things about Wikipedia is it has such a wide diversity of information that when you hear something you can look it up. Recently I overheard some musicians talking about the "head" in music. I didn't know (I only play a musician on the Internet); now I do. Or do I? All you musicians who read this blog take a look and and let me know in the comments if the Wikipedia article is full of hooey. Better yet, sign in and edit the article yourself!
  • And we finish off with some scat ... by none other than swashbuckling spinach consumer, Popeye. It even has lyrics, so you can follow along!

So take five and explore. Let me know what you think in the comments ....There will be five more next week ... I swear!

Join Rochester's music community as they remember Rafael "Ralph" Ortiz

Rafael OrtizCome out to join more than seventy Rochester area musicians when they come together for a nine-hour benefit concert to honor their friend, Rochester bassist Rafael "Ralph" Ortiz, who passed away February 2, 2009, after a short battle with cancer.

The concert will take place at Water Street Music Hall (204 N. Water Street) on Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 10 p.m., and will feature 11 bands and many guest appearances on alternating main and club stages at Water Street Music Hall, including (subject to change):

  • Chet Catallo & the Cats, with special guests Eli Konikoff and Peter Chwazik
  • Prime Time Funk, with special guests Todd East, Jeff Cosco and Trevor Neumann
  • Steve Greene
  • Joe Brucato
  • Atlas
  • Don Maracle & Dave Hanlon
  • The Buddahood
  • Me & the Boyz
  • Po Boys Brass Band
  • The Legendary Dukes
  • Dan Schmitt & the Shadows
  • Mint Jam

"Incredibly, Ralph played with most of the musicians participating," says Prime Time Funk co-founder and best friend, Jim Richmond. "Some he taught, and the rest are fans who wanted to play with him but never got the chance."

Tickets are $20 and will be available this Friday, March 20 at: WSMH, Northfield Music, House of Guitars, Record Archive, The Bop Shop, Sound Source, Abilene Bar & Lounge, Murray Street Station (Newark, NY) and Irene's Coffee & Jazz House (Geneva). The event will also feature a silent auction of special items including one of Ralph's basses, guitars donated by Northfield Music and House of Guitars, and two club passes donated by the Rochester International Jazz Festival. The sale of food and concessions will also benefit the Rafael Ortiz Memorial Fund, which will help to pay medical and other family expenses as well as fund two music scholarships in Ralph's name: one for a graduating senior pursuing music studies from Ralph's alma mater, Newark High School, and the other for bass lessons at Northfield Music in Pittsford, where Ralph taught for 20 years.

Bop Arts brings the Ab Baars Trio with Ken Vandermark to Rochester

Bop Arts logoBop Arts, Inc. will be presenting the innovative music of Ab Baars Trio with Ken Vandermark on Monday, April 20th at 8pm. Saxophonist Ab Baars is a celebrated players on the Dutch jazz scene, member of the ICP Orchestra (familiar to denizens of the Bop Shop Atrium) and has worked with many in jazz improvised music on both sides of the pond. With his trio of bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven, Baars has released numerous CDs, including the new Goofy June Bug (Wig) featuring a new collaboration with saxophonist Ken Vandermark, an intrepid explorer of improvised music, a fellow Chicagoan (fellow to me that is), and a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Award. Just Us and Madeline Forster ... CD Release Party this Friday

Madeline Forster CD CoverYou may have had an opportunity to hear Madeline Forster sing as she has done a lot of singing around Rochester. Through her vocal chops and a lot of hard work (and the tireless promotion of her father and sometime band member Tim Forster), Madeline has built quite a following here and is getting gigs in some great rooms in Toronto where she is finishing school.

On Friday, April 10th, Forster is releasing her debut CD Just You, Just Me at the Boulder Coffee Company @ Brooks Landing, 955 Genesee Street in Rochester (across from the new Staybridge Inn). The CD, recorded at Red Rock Recording in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, and features arrangements by Dave Rivello, John Nyerges, and Chris Ziemba.

The party will start at 7:00 pm and go until midnight with live music all night long. Madeline will be performing with various guests including John Nyerges, Chris Ziemba, Dave Baron, Dave Arenius, Aaron Staebell, Kate Pittman, Bill Tiberio, Nick Finzer and others. The great Dave Rivello Ensemble will be performing in between Madeline's sets. This should be a great show all around.

With this post, I'm going to start a new thing here, one of I hope many more to come. If you're a jazz artist or group from Rochester or with Rochester roots and are planning to have a CD release party in the area, send me an email through the site, provide the details and an image to use and I'll try to post it.

Matt Wilson Quartet ... Live shot

Live at the Green Mill in Chicago. Matt Wilson Quartet. You saw him recently with his Arts & Crafts group... Wilson's quartet has some monster musicians. Andrew D'Angelo on sax and bass clarinet, Jeff Lederer on sax and clainet, and Chris Lightcap on bass. Damn... (sorry for the poor quality on the photo...had to take it while heading to the loo).
