Jazz Around Town: In anxious anticipation of June, we Spring into April

Click here to go to XRIJF websiteNow that the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival has announced another varied lineup for its nine days in June, I have my work cut out for me. Lots to do to prepare (I'm working on a slight redesign and some other enhancements) and, of course, to write as I try to help you find "who you don't know," which is what this festival is all about and what makes it a voyage of discovery every year for me and those I meet during the fest. There are two new venue (Abilene and the Rochester Club), a new series (Italian), and Xerox and the festival have something planned that I'll provide some details on soon. Jazz Around Town: Amidst all the karaoke and DJs, there IS live jazz out there

David Glasser @ Strathallan 2008 (John Herr Photo)Looking at City, I noticed how many venues are offering karaoke and DJs nights. One of the effects of the economy (and ASCAP, etc. wanting a cut of any covers). Good thing that karaoke and jazz don't mix well (especially if I'm participating, if you know what I mean...). Well, here are the next seven days of live jazz music in and around Rochester, NY.

Exodus to Jazz brings Annie Sellick back on April 2nd to walk along her Street of Dreams

Annie Sellick imageOn April 2, 2010, the Exodus to Jazz series will be bringing back vocalist Annie Sellick to Rochester. She previously appeared on the Exodus to Jazz stage in September 2007. An engaging singer from Nashville, Sellick is touring her fifth CD Street of Dreams, which has been moving up the JazzWeek charts.  Street of Dreams has Sellick backed up by Gerald Clayton, who contributed some arrangements, and the rhythm section from the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, with Jeff Hamilton on drums, pianist Tamir Hendelman (who has also appeared as a leader on the ETJ stage), and bassist Christoph Luty. Sellick will be appearing here with Rob Allgeyer on piano, Elisa Pruitt on bass, and Justin Varnes on drums.

Listen to a couple of cuts from Sellick's new CD or watch her with Gerald Clayton and others on YouTube. Here's Sellick's MySpace page as well, which has some more of her music.

The show starts at 8:00 pm (one show with two one-hour sets), at Frontier Hall, Radisson Hotel Rochester Riverside, 120 Main Street East, Rochester, NY. Reserved tickets (tables): $25; General Admission (seats): $20; Students: $10. Get your tickets at all Wegman's That's the Ticket outlets, on Ticketweb.com, by e-mail or by phone at (585)733-7685.

Third time a charm? The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet returns to heat up Exodus to Jazz and Rochester

Gabriel Alegria imageThey've been a charm each time they've come, so it's likely the third one will be.... This Friday, it's again time to welcome the always exciting melting pot of jazz, traditional music from the coast of Peru, and other influences of the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet. Again brought to you by Exodus to Jazz, the series at which they have appeared at least twice before (I think this will be the group's fourth time in Rochester as I saw them back in 2006 at UofR). Ranging from standards like Summertime with the Peruvian heat added by congero Huevito's cajón, to some straight ahead sounds written by Alegria or members of this band, all the way to Peruvian "folk jazz," this group is always a trip to other places (plus they will likely be telling you about the trip to Peru that they use to help fund their tours and recordings).

The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet will begin generate some heat in the still cold winter in Rochester at 8:00 pm for the first of two one-hour sets at the Radisson Riveride Hotel, Riverview Ballroom, in Rochester on Friday, March 12, 2010. Ticket prices are:

  • Reserved seats - $25 (table seating for 4 - 5 people)
  • General Admission - $20 (theatre style, “first come, first seated”)
  • Students - $10 at the door with current ID
Tickets are available at Wegmans "That's the Ticket" locations, TicketWeb.com and via email order to [email protected] (Reserved Seat tickets only). For additional information send an email to Exodus To Jazz or call (585) 733-7685.

Live Shots: Mel Henderson & Bob Vosteen Guitar Duo and the drummers

Catching my buddy Mel Henderson with Bob Vosteen at the Roam Cafe on Park Ave., jamming with a group of hand drummers (I enjoyed them when they played across the street on the sidewalk during the Park Avenue Festival this summer). A little wine, a little antipasto, some jazz guitar sounds with a Latin beat....mmmmm that's tasty.
