Jazz Around Town: Hard to start thinking about XRIJF in June when there's snow falling....

Robert Glasper at University of RochesterYeah, I'm getting sick of it, too (but couldnt' resist yet another snow/cold reference in the title...). But seriously, the Xerox Rochester Jazz Festival starts up June 10th and, based on the lineup announced yesterday, I'm stoked to begin planning my "playlist." While I haven't decided whether to change my approach, my usual gig is to do posts over time between now and XRIJF that set out who I'm planning on catching, a bit on why, and some additional information on the artists that I run across. These make for handy-dandy references during the festival. However, they are personal to my own very eclectic tastes, so may not be for everyone. One artist who will be here at least 5 of the 9 days is bassist Roberto Occhipinti (profile at City), who is here with some of his own projects and playing with some others who will be appearing. He's playing Friday at SUNY Brockport at their Jazz Day (wish I could make it out...). Today's image is from Robert Glasper's great concert at UofR on Monday. Well, here's what's happening in live jazz in and around Rochester over the next seven days.....

And the countdown to the 10th Anniversary XRIJF begins....

XRIJF logoFor those of you following my Twitter feed or Jazz@Rochester on Facebook (or the post below), you might have seen that I was at the press conference this morning for the 10th Anniversary Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, which will run from June 10-18, 2011. Producers Marc Iacona and John Nugent announced the full lineup, which will be the largest festival to date, with more than 1000 artists performing at 285 concerts and a record 70-plus free concerts. Previously announced headliners are Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Natalie Cole, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones – The Original Lineup, The Fab Faux (a Beatles tribute band), "The Glorious Hodgepodge Show" with the Tangerine Crème Strings & The Hogtown Horns, k.d. lang and The Siss Boom Bang. Today, XRIJF added trumpeter Chris Botti to the headliners. As in the past, the lineup (which you can access on XRIJF's site) has some familiar faces and some new artists. I feel like there are more local jazz artists gracing the Club Pass stages this year. As Nugent always says (and it's even on their t-shirts...) "it's not who you know, it's who you don't know). So, what’s new in 2011? Here's what they told us:

  • Rochester Gas and Electric, has signed on as a new sponsor, and will present a new free concert stage in the RG&E parking lot on the corner of East Avenue and Chestnut Street (now we'll have to go around the parking lot, or possibly get sidetracked...). The stage will feature six free shows with Rochester and regional artists.
  • The East Avenue and Chestnut St. Stage will be resituated on Chestnut street to face south on Chestnut to accommodate more people in the intersection and help with the sound wars that develop with the free stage on Jazz Street.
  • As I posted about awhile back, the Eastman School of Music will offer the five-part course, Introduction to Jazz History, during the Festival. It will be held June 13 – June 17 in Eastman’s newest concert venue, Hatch Hall, during the Festival. Tuition is $180. For information and to register visit the Press Room on the XRIJF site.
  • XRIJF and WXXI-TV are partnering again on a new series of six one-hour programs to be filmed at this year’s Festival and distributed nationally to PBS stations this fall and next year. The concerts to be featured include the performances of Kevin Eubanks, Curtis Stigers, Grace Kelly, Kenny Barron, Regina Carter and the Producer’s Concert.
  • Channel 13 WHAM TV will produce a half-hour prime time special on the Festival celebrating the Festival’s 10th anniversary that will air Thursday May 26 at 8 p.m. Doug Emblidge will host the program, which will also air on Rochester’s CW in a time period yet to be scheduled.

I will have coverage over the next few months, supplementing what you'll find in other sources and on the XRIJF site.  More on that later.... Hope to see you on Jazz Street in June!

This just in ... Robert Glasper Trio @ UofR on March 21st

JADPpromo_glasper Just found out that pianist Robert Glasper is coming to Rochester with his Trio on March 21st to perform at the Interfaith Chapel at University of Rochester at 8:00 pm.

Glasper is known for having his feet in both the tradition of jazz and in hip hop and other musical traditions. While still instilled with his own voice, his trio work clearly has a foot in the jazz tradition, but he also has another side, currently embodied in his Robert Glasper Experiment project that looks outside the jazz idiom to find his expression. Glasper has shared the stage with Kanye, Lupe, Mos Def, Beyonce, Q-Tip and others. His most recent disc, Double Booked, showcases these two sides of Glasper, with one side dedicated to his Trio work and the other to the Experiment. I've been listening to Glasper's music since he made an impression when I saw him with his Trio at the Rochester International Jazz Festival in 2006 (although I clearly missed his birthplace, which is Houston, not Rochester as indicated back then). More recently, I listened to a podcast of an interview of Glasper with Josh Jackson of WGBO's The Checkout during which he shared what he's listening to on his iPod (there's also a podcast of a live set with Glasper and fellow Houstonian Jason Moran on The Checkout).

This concert is brought to the UofR community and Rochester by The Jazz Audience Development Program, and is sponsored by No Jackets Required (NJR), a campus music performance group, along with thirteen other organizations, including greek groups, cultural groups, academic groups, and other performance groups. which was developed at the Eastman School of Music and UofR by Dan Israel, a recent alumnus. The goal of the program is to introduce a new audience to jazz music by creating a day-long jazz-related program targeted towards people who wouldn't normally listen to jazz. The program is unique to Addeo Music International in New York City, where Mr. Israel has brought it and who works with Mr. Glasper.  I'm glad they finally contacted me as we fully support that goal here on Jazz@Rochester.

The program features three components to further the goal of widening the jazz audience:

  • Masterclass targeting music students
  • Open discussion targeting non-music students
  • Affordable evening concert

Glasper was the perfect candidate for the JADP program. The day starts at 3:30 in the Gowen Room in Wilson Commons (UR Campus) with a masterclass featuring NJR's own jazz ensemble. This is a free event, and is open to all students, though it is strongly focused towards musicians. Next, there is an open discussion with Robert Glasper at 6pm, also in the Gowen Room. This event is also free, and is structured so that Glasper can have an informal discussion with students. This is NOT a lecture, and is designed to foster a personal connection between attendees and Glasper.

Finally, the JADP program concludes with a concert in the Interfaith Chapel at U of R. Glasper will perform a two-hour concert with his Trio. Tickets for the concert are $5 for students and $10 for UR Community and the General Public, and are available at the door (CASH ONLY) and at the UR's Common Market (cash/credit card/URos).

You want a Club Pass for XRIJF 2011 ... fahgettaboutit!

XRIJF logoAs I noted on Twitter and Facebook on March 5th, Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival’s announced today that the Club Passes for the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Festival have sold out, which is much earlier than any previous year and even prior to the Club Pass Series lineup being announced.

Individual tickets to all Club Pass Series shows will be available at the door for $25 per person per show at Kilbourn Hall and $20 per person per show for all other shows. Entry to all Club Pass Series shows is first-come, first-served with the Pass or tickets purchased at the door. Individual Club show tickets are not available in advance. To keep these types of individual tickets available, the festival promoters limit the number of Club Passes sold. “Several thousand passes were sold, a few hundred more than last year, and sales were brisk from day one,” said Marc Iacona, Producer and Executive Director, continuing:

While we could keep selling passes we intentionally limit the number so that people who choose not to buy a pass can purchase tickets to single shows at the door. We are thrilled that the popularity of Club Pass Series has grown each year. We say that the exciting part of this series is, ‘It’s not who you know, it’s who you don’t know,’ and this year’s early pass sell-out certainly reflects the following that the Club Series has built over the years.

For the 2010 Festival, more than half of all Club Passes were sold before the end of December and the remainder sold out before May.

But I hear tell there's some hot jazz around town to warm you up. I hope I can stop this winter motif soon. There's some new sounds at Bop Shop Atrium this week and smooting it out with Four80East at Exodus to Jazz. A wide variety abounds...  Here are the listings for live jazz in and around Rochester, NY, for the next seven days.

Hey, check out Jazz@Rochester on Facebook! There is more than just a feed of my posts there, so it may be worth a "Like".
