Jazz Around Town: What ROC jazzers would you put in the Hall of Fame?

ROCMHOF imageYesterday, the Rochester Music Hall of Fame announced their (not first) Class of Inductees for 2012. The Inductees include the following notables with major ties to ROC: flautist Doriot Anthony Dwyer, one of the first female members of a major orchestra; the long-gone Corinthian Hall; opera singer Jenny Lind; the RPO's Jeff Tyzik; Joe English, drummer for Paul McCartney's Wings and jazz-rock fusion band Sea Level; Charles Strouse, Broadway composer; Gene Cornish, guitarist for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Rascals; the amazing Cab Calloway; and Chuck Mangione. They will honor this class of inductees at 7:00 pm April 29th at a musical gala at the Eastman Theatre. Jeff Spevak has more detail in the D&C  or click on the image (or the link in the right panel) and go to their site to learn more about this long-overdue acknowledgment of the great musicians and music that have always been a part of Rochester. By the way, don't know if you noticed, but I guess I liked 2011 so much that I felt I had to keep using it for part of the week in the posts to date this year (just noticed that... I really must have been sick last couple of weeks...). And now for the next seven days of live jazz here in the Flower (or was that Flour?) City:

Jazz Around Town: There's an uptick in live jazz in and around Rochester . . . keep it coming!

There was a real step up in the wide variety of live jazz over the next seven days. In addition, there's quite a lot of stuff coming in the next few months so check out the "Heads Up" listings at the bottom of this post.

As some of you may know, I'm a recovering lawyer. Although I never practiced in the great state of New York, I work on books that help lawyers practice in my "day job" for Thomson Reuters. Hope you can catch the jazz at the Monroe County Bar Association's Jazz For Justice benefit this year. It's for a good cause. The MCBA Foundation provides funding to a number of worthwhile programs and initiatives, including: Deaf Equal Access Fund, Lawyers for Learning, Rochester Legal Diversity Clerkship Program, Rochester Teen Court, Sydney R. Rubin Mock Trial Competition, and ACT For the Children. Click on the image in the center panel to get more information and buy tickets.

Wanna XRIJF Club Pass? Fahgettaboudit!

XRIJF M&T LogoThe Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival announced today that Club Passes for the 11th Edition of the festival have sold out! This is earlier than ever before and prior to the Club Pass Series lineup being announced. The Club Pass is a value pass, good for over 200 shows over nine days, offering a significant savings over individual concert ticket prices of $20 and $25 per show. This is especially true for some of the fanatics I know.

Don't panic if you didn't get one. Individual tickets to all Club Pass Series shows will be available at the door for $20-$25 per person per show (they are not available in advance). Entry to all Club Pass Series shows is first-come, first-served with the Pass or tickets purchased at the door, so having a Pass doesn't give you preference in getting in (as long as you're in line with the rest of us...).

The Festival’s complete 9-day lineup will be announced March 20. In other XRIJF news, XRIJF also announced that Steve Martin will be doing a 4:00 pm matinee in addition to his sold out show on Wednesday, June 27th. Tickets for that go on sale on Friday.
