Exodus to Jazz closes out this season with Eric Person & Metamorphosis on Saturday

Eric Person saxIn the final concert of the Winter-Spring season, Exodus To Jazz will be presenting saxophonist Eric Person and his electric, rhythm & groove project Metamorphosis on Saturday, May 5th at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation at 8:00pm. Person will be joined by keyboardist Adam Klipple, bassist Adam Armstrong and drummer Shinnosuke Takahashi. Person has been on the ETJ stage before with his Meta-Four band, joined by saxophone great Houston Person (no relation).

Eric Person has been described on JazzReview.com as a “one of the best alto & soprano saxophonists working today.” Person has produced eight discs as a leader and is in high demand as a sideman, working with Dave Holland, Chico Hamilton, McCoy Tyner, and John Hicks and the World Saxophone Quarteta among others. He is also in demand on the rock, funk and world music scenes, where he has performed with Vernon Reid, Ben Harper, Ofra Haza and Bootsy Collins to name but a few.

The Lutheran Church of the Reformation is at 111 N. Chestnut St., Rochester. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the concert starting at 8:00 pm. Tickets: Patron-$35 (includes 7:00pm reception and signed poster); Premium seating-$25; General admission-$20. Tickets are available at the door, at all Wegmans Stores until 4:00 pm Friday, May 4th and online at Brownpapertickets.com until 4:00 pm the night of the performance. Call (585) 733-7685 or visit the ETJ website. Feel free join the Exodus To Jazz “End of Season” after party at Henry B’s Restaurant on East Avenue following the concert. Just mention Exodus To Jazz to partake of the cocktail and food specials for concert-goers.

Jazz@Rochester is a sponsor of the Exodus to Jazz series. It has been a great season and I for one am looking forward to the Fall when ETJ returns. Hope to see you on Saturday!

Rochester Music Hall of Fame getting its gala induction thang goin on April 29th

ROCMHOF imageRochester Music Hall of Fame is having their first Induction Ceremony on April 29th at Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre. The gala event starts at 7:00 pm. Inductees include the following notables with major ties to ROC: flautist Doriot Anthony Dwyer, one of the first female members of a major orchestra; the long-gone Corinthian Hall; opera singer Jenny Lind; the RPO's Jeff Tyzik; Joe English, drummer for Paul McCartney's Wings and jazz-rock fusion band Sea Level; Charles Strouse, Broadway composer; Gene Cornish, guitarist for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Rascals; Cab Calloway; and Chuck Mangione.

English, Cornish, Strouse and Dwyer are all scheduled to perform, and Cab Calloway’s daughter, Cecilia, is going to perform and accept her father’s award. Felix Cavaliere, who was one of the other original Rascals, is reuniting with Cornish, and they will be performing together. Prime Time Funk is the house band and will be accompanying Cornish and Cavaliere as well as Cecilia Calloway. Gap Mangione's New Big Band will be playing a tribute to his brother's music. Mangione will be onstage as well. More detail if you click on the image (or the link in the right panel) and go to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame site to learn more about this long-overdue acknowledgment of the great musicians and the music that have always been a part of Rochester.

It will be a night of many musical surprises! Tickets are $50 and $35 and available through their website, by calling the the RPO box office at 585-454-2100, and at all area Wegmans.

Jazz Around Town: As one door closes to jazz another opens ....

USO Quintet at ETJIt'll be impossible this week to beat last week's jazz experience, hanging with the Ulysses S. Owens Quintet before and after their incredible performance for Exodus to Jazz, but here are the live jazz listings for the next seven days. These include several at what I'm hearing is a "new" venue with some regular jazz gigs to replace the loss of Pomodoro's (only as a jazz venue for the time being, not as a restaurant), the Brighton Restaurant on East Ave., where local favorites Paradigm Shift kick off a regular gig tonight. [Update: I may have been premature on the loss of Pomodoro's as a venue, but would welcome someone from the Pomo restaurants letting me know what the deal is as I'm not seeing any listings for them.]

Jazz Around Town: Going to a USO show and then some...

USO at ETJCasting about after Queen Latifah bowed out of the 2012 XRIJF, John Nugent and crew hit a home run and have now booked 2011 Best New Artist Grammy winner Esperanza Spaulding into the still open night at Eastman. While there's plenty of jazz around XRIJF on all nine days, it's nice to have at least one jazz act in the Big House.

Highlight for me this week will be the Exodus To Jazz performance Saturday of the Ulysses S. Owens Quintet, featuring Christian McBride (image is from USO's performance here for ETJ a few years back).

Jazz Around Town: I'm baaack! Didya miss me?

jazz club signFinally back home from my trip to Kansas and Chicago, just in time to bring you another set of listings for the next seven days. One BIG regret is that I didn't get to hear any jazz while in Chicago, including a chance to see Katie Ernst play at an old haunt of mine near the University of Chicago (was at an open mike with my singer-songwriter-neonatologist friend, Rich). Now that I'm back, I hope to get out soon as I'm jonesin for some...
