But wait, there's more ... Exodus to Jazz continues to bring great music to town

ETJ Logo

You may have caught the great Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet recently, but my friend José DaCosta's Exodus to Jazz has more in store for you in coming months. Since our spring and summer schedules will fill up fast, I thought I'd give you a heads up so you can get them on your calendar (they'll be on mine... some of them already are).

As of right now, the following concerts remain in the 2014 season (and they are great ones):

  • The Helen Sung Quintet on Friday, May 16th: Pianist Helen Sung has appeared here four times for Exodus to Jazz and is returning in May for a CD release concert for her new disc Anthem for a New Day (affiliate link), which has been getting critical and popular acclaim. The May 16th show has been cancelled, but ETJ will reschedule it later in the year.
  • Rachelle Ferrell on Friday, June 6th: A while ago I ran across a video of a live performance by Rachelle Ferrell and was amazed by this vocalist. She defies musical genres, but her live concerts must be experienced to understand this performer's potent combination of range, phrasing, and musicianship.
  • Tom Harrell Colors of a Dream on Saturday, August 23rd: Tom Harrell returns to Rochester and Exodus to Jazz with his Colors Of A Dream project (affiliate link), a piano-less ensemble with two bassists—Ugonna Okegwo, Harrell’s bassist for 14 years, joined by Esperanza Spalding, who also contrributes vocals on some tunes—with Harrell's regular band members Wayne Escoffery on tenor saxophone and Johnathan Blake on drums joined by Jaleel Shaw on alto saxophone.

There is an additional ETJ concert in October that remains to be announced. All of the concerts will be at 8:00 pm in the beautiful, historic Performance Hall at Hochstein School of Music, 50 N. Plymouth Ave. in downtown Rochester. You can get more information and purchase tickets through the lineup page on Exodus to Jazz's website.

Exodus to Jazz brings the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet to ROC this coming Friday

image from gabrielalegria.com

In 2008, the Latin Jazz Network described trumpeter Gabriel Alegría's Afro-Peruvian Sextet in this way: "Every once in awhile there comes a musician who, when playing his or her chosen instrument, seems to carry within a vital life-force that is irrepressible." And last year, in reviewing this ensemble's CD Ciudad de los Reyes, Latin Jazz Network described the Sextet as an "ensemble that mixes music like a mythical painter daubing a mystical canvas with the vivid colours."

Having heard this great ensemble several times since 2006 (all brought to Rochester by Exodus to Jazz), I must agree. You start out the first time with the question "Afro-Peruvian jazz?" and before long know the answer. Yes! The group plays an infectious blend of the rhythms and African-influenced coastal music of Alegria's native Peru with modern jazz that is complex but can compel your feet to move irrespective of the placement of your posterior.

Exodus to Jazz is bringing Gabriel Alegría's Afro-Peruvian Sextet to the Performance Hall at Hochstein School of Music this coming Friday, April 11th at 8:00 pm. Here's the skinny on when and what:

  • Venue: Hochstein School of Music, 50 N. Plymouth Ave., Rochester, NY 14614
  • When to Get There: Music starts at 8:00 pm with the doors open at 7:00 pm. There will be 2 1-hour sets with a 20-minute intermission
  • Tickets: You can pick up before before the show at Brownpapertickets.com at the following prices: Patron - $40; Premium - $30; General Admission - $25. At the door tickets will be priced at Patron - $43; Premium - $33; General Admission - $28 Student - $15

A little early, but with the same great live jazz in the ROC ...

jazz 1 wayI'm writing this a bit early today as I'm going out of town later today, so check back tomorrow in case I've added any "stragglers" (especially you who receive it via email).  For those who receive the blog posts via email, I've heard from some that the print is too small. As I have 50+ eyes, I feel your pain!  I have adjusted it, but have not been able to verify how it looks to you all, so send me a message and I'll see what I can do .... and now for the jazz in and around ROC for the next seven days:
