Use it (live jazz) or lose it ... Next seven days of live jazz in Rochester

Tom Harrell

I know it's summer (well, it's starting to look and feel like fall a bit...), but like lightning bugs in a bottle, live jazz will fade away if it is not provided some air. To that end (and because ETJ promoter Jose DaCosta is a friend), I wanted to plug Exodus to Jazz concert with Tom Harrell and Colors of a Dream on Saturday one more time.

Like any live jazz in Rochester, we need to support it or it will go away.... Hope to see you there! Now, here's the live jazz in and around the ROC for the next seven days:

Tom Harrell's Colors of a Dream at Exodus to Jazz on August 23rd ... Go Hear This!

Exodus to Jazz is bringing Tom Harrell's Colors of a Dream project to Rochester's Hochstein Performance Hall on Saturday, August 23rd at 8:00 pm at Hochstein Performance Hall in Rochester.

COLORS OF A DREAM album cover photo
Photo: Angela Harrell

Another innovative exploration by trumpeter and composer Harrell, Colors of a Dream includes some of the best talent in jazz in a pianoless sextet featuring two basses played by Ugonna Okegwo and Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, with Spalding doubling on vocal, along with Jaleel Shaw on alto saxophone, Wayne Escoffery on tenor saxophone, and Johnathan Blake on drums. I have to agree with music critic  Howard Reich from my former stomping grounds Chicago, who wrote in the Chicago Tribune that Harrell:

Neither aggressively avant-garde nor focused on the past, neither steeped in the language of bebop nor entirely free from it. Harrell's music simply celebrates sonic beauty for its own sake.

As a writer, Harrell is always exploring the combination of beautiful melodies and compelling grooves to push at the edges of jazz while keeping it real. He works with the best musicians in bringing that music to the world and now to you....

Here's the skinny on the concert:

  • Venue: Hochstein School of Music, 50 N. Plymouth Ave., downtown Rochester
  • Concert Time: 8:00 pm, doors at 7:00 pm (2 one-hour sets with 20-minute intermission)
  • Ticket Prices: Patron-$45; Premium-$35; General Admission-$30; Student-$15.  At the door all tickets will be $3.00 more. Tickets are available at Brownpapertickets.com and at the door.
  • Please note that Patron and Premium tickets are now assigned seating (a seat chart is available on Brown Paper Tickets when you purchase to show you where the seats are available), so purchase your tickets sooner rather than later as they are going fast. This is a change from previous ETJ shows.

I am really looking forward to this!  I hope you'll come out to hear this music, support Exodus to Jazz and live jazz in Rochester!

I'll leave you with a performance of Harrell and Colors of a Dream:

The lighter side of jazz in summer in the ROC (August 7-13, 2014)

jazz one wayThe summer is upon us and jazz musicians turn to gigs elsewhere or just kick up their heels for a break at a lake or some other clime. There's not much around and I expect that some of the gigs below may not actually be continuing, but they're still being listed and no one has contacted me to tell me otherwise... so call first on those you see repeating week to week.
