Falling Leaves.... but we have the jazz for you (live Jazz in ROC, October 23rd-29th)

jazz clubFrom what I hear and can now confirm, the Strathallan Hotel is back in jazz and will apparently commence as it left off this week with Bob Sneider (see Friday). I will have to check it out as I also hear it is a different space than it was before (given that the entire hotel has been revamped, I'm not surprised).

WGMC Jazz 90.1 still has their Fall pledge drive, which has started up.  Please click on the Donate Now button on the Jazz 90.1 website to give'em some scratch to keep the jazz going.

It's that time again ... XRIJF Club Passes go on sale on Friday, October 24th

image from www.jazzrochester.comThe Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival's Club Pass goes on sale this Friday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the early bird price of $174 plus $6 service charge, $8 if mailed (a $20 savings off the regular price and the same as they have been for the last two years).

The festival's 14th Edition will be held over nine days from June 19-27, 2015. The Club Pass is a value pass to discovery offering a significant savings over individual show tickets and access to 234 Club shows at 13 venues. Only a limited number of passes is available.

What's New in the Club Pass Series for 2015

This year the festival is adding a new major Club Pass venue with one set nightly from 5:00-6:00 pm. The new venue seats 1000 people. Details about the new venue will be announced in November. Additionally, a new combined Squeezer's Roots and Americana Stage will open in the Sibley Building on Main Street. This new venue will be located on the second floor and has a capacity of 400. Two sets will be presented nightly at 7:45 p.m. & 9:45 p.m. This venue replaces Abilene and the Inn on Broadway, which will be undergoing construction.

The 6:00 p.m. shows at the Rochester Regional Health System Big Tent will now be free and feature regional big bands. The 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. shows remain $20 at the door or access with the Club Pass. Two additional nights will be added to Harro Ballroom this year, making the venue open all nine days of the festival.

John Nugent notes that "as we enter our 14th Festival Edition, my goal as artistic director is to deliver the strongest possible level of artistic performers of creative improvised music to XRIJF's lineup while ensuring our audiences are elevated to the highest peaks of inspiration. We've received an enormous number of suggestions and submissions from around the globe, so rest assured, our 2015 club pass series could very well be the best ever." Marc Iacona, Producer and Executive Director said, "We are very pleased to welcome the Sibley Building as a new venue. It is right in the heart of the exciting transformation going on downtown and will offer a unique experience for our audience. We thank Joe Eddy and Winn Development for their vision and investment in Rochester and for working with us and adding a new and exciting dimension to the festival."

The "Skinny" on the Passes

The Club Pass early bird price is good until 12:00 a.m. Midnight on December 31, 2014. The price then increases to $194 plus service charge on January 1, 2014 until sold out. The service charge per pass for online purchases is $6, $8 if mailed. The fastest and easiest way Club Passes may be purchased is online at rochesterjazz.com via XRIJF's e-ticketing system. Customers may also order Passes by phone at 585-454-2060. Individual Club Pass show tickets can be purchased at the door for $20 and $25 per show. Entry to all Club Pass shows is first-come, first-served with the Pass or tickets purchased at the door.

The 2015 full Festival lineup will be announced in March 2015.

The warm temperature is tempting, but likely fleeting (the live Jazz in ROC, October 16th-22nd)

jazz 1 way

As you can see from the Live Shots in the last couple of posts, I was out a bit hearing some live music over the past week. It was great getting out again (have been somewhat of a hermit recently ... or just lazy!). Getting out this week to hear the Four80East concert being presented by Exodus to Jazz (and yet another performance by my buds in Paradigm Shift)

Here's the "ask" this week.  If you're out at a gig, please ask the artists and venues if they know about Jazz@Rochester and suggest they visit jazzrochester.com and click on the button above for "For Jazz Artists & Venues."  I'd be obliged....

WGMC Jazz 90.1 also has an "ask" going with their Fall pledge drive, which has started up.  Please click on the Donate Now button on the Jazz 90.1 website to give'em some scratch to keep the jazz going.

Four80East coming to Rochester this Saturday, October 18th

Four80east_201410Led by co-founders Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace, Toronto-based Four80East return again to the Exodus To Jazz series on Saturday, October 18th at the Zeppa Auditorium at German House. Since their first release in 1997, Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace of Four80East have created music that has kept the band a mainstay on contemporary jazz radio and touring circuits, and in five subsequent releases. They will be joined by saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa and guitarist Matt Marshak.

Paradigm Shift will be opening for Four80East with their signature soul jazz groove. Paradigm Shift is guitarist Mel Henderson, keyboardist Gerry Youngman bringing that B3 sound, and Sean Jefferson holding it down on drums. Paradigm Shift maintains an active national and international touring schedule, as well as playing throughout the Rochester area (as readers will see several times recently at which yours truly was present).

For one admission, you will get two 50-60 minute sets from Four80East, plus Paradigm Shift! Here's the skinny on the event:

  • Venue: Zeppa Auditorium at German House, 315 Gregory Street, Rochester
  • Concert Time: Four80East begins at 8:00pm, with doors opening at 7:00pm. Paradigm Shift will be playing at 7:10 pm.
  • Tickets prices are Patron $40; General Admission $28. Buy pre-concert tickets at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door. All pre-concert tickets will be available at the Will Call desk. See the Brown Paper Tickets site for more information about seating options and other opportunties for those that dine at Zeppa Bistro.

Update October 15th:

Parking for visitors to events at the German House/Zeppa Bistro & Auditorium is welcome at the locations below (all in ROC and 14620 zip):

Seven Days of Live Jazz in Rochester (Live Jazz in ROC, October 9th-14th)

jazz 1 way

FYI, on Thursdays there appears to be a new venue bringing in local jazz groups and artists at least fairly regularly. That venue is Flour City Station on East Avenue (in the space where Milestones used to be). My buddies in Paradigm Shift are there this Thursday (and the $3 Door/Drinks Thursdays is where they appear to be featuring local jazz acts). Come out and support if you can as there has been a dwindling number of venues providing those "jazz stylings" you know you're looking for.  If you know of any more, let me know (I've heard rumours of some others coming back online, but will wait until I have confirmation to pass it on....).

So, with no further adoo... here's the jazz in and around the ROC for the next seven days...

A "bye" week for jazz in Rochester (Live jazz in ROC, October 2-8)

jazz signThis week is an off week as there seems to be a dwindling amount of live jazz in Rochester over the next week.  However, perhaps I don't know of some of it? If not, let me know.  But for now, this is the live jazz I've found in and around Rochester, NY, for October 2nd through October 8th is after the break....
