Brave the cold ... hear some live jazz! (Live jazz in ROC, February 26th to March 4th, 2015)

jazz sign imageGoing to (try to) brave the cold and snow over the next week to get out and hear some music... been a hermit too long!

In some local news, the Rochester Music Hall Of Fame today announced its class of 2015 inductees, which will be celebrated at the Hall of Fame’s induction ceremony at Eastman Theatre on Sunday, April 26. This year's crop includes a couple of jazz artists—the great bassist Ron Carter and local pianist Gap Mangione.  Congratulations!

The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival also announced this week three more Eastman Theatre: Herb Alpert and Lani Hall and the Wheels of Soul Summer Tour with the Susan Tedeschi-Derek Trucks Band and special guests Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings plus Doyle Bramhall II, and the Steep Canyon Rangers.

On Blue Note, playing some good notes ... Our Point of View at Le Poussin Rouge

Our Point of View, a supergroup of contemporary Blue Note Records artists—including Robert Glasper, Lionel Loueke and Ambrose Akinmusire—gathered together at Le Poussin Rouge in NYC for a program of originals and Blue Note classics, and NPR captured it for us for for the Jazz Night in America Wednesday broadcasts last week ....

Really freakin cold and snowy outside, some hot jazz inside (Live jazz in ROC, February 12-18, 2015)

Well, I almost have a ski-able mountain on our parkway here in the city (OK for little GI Joe skiers, but you know what I mean...). I am finding it increasingly difficult to get out to do anything. But try we must. See if you can find something to get out and warm up to this coming week below

By the way, on the 9th, the Xerox Rochester Jazz Festival announced two more headliners for the 2015 festival. Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Academy Award-winning actress and best-selling author, Jennifer Hudson will perform on Wednesday, June 24th. Grammy winning blues guitarist, songwriter and singer Gary Clark Jr. with very special guest singer, Beth Hart will be here on Tuesday, June 23d.

The Mike Kaupa video hour (well minutes...)

Trumpeter Mike Kaupa recently threw a couple of YouTube videos over Jazz@Rochester's virtual threshold. First up is one with the Institute for Creative Music as Mike shows his chops in the DIY community:

Next up is a questionable clip advertising a "Failed Middle Aged Jazz Musician" doll... (wait for it ... had to leave the first part in to give you the full flavor):

While I'll choose the music video I post here, I'm not adverse to you throwing an interesting jazz video my way.  Just check in the Sound & VIsion category to make sure I haven't already published a link.

We're feeling better now ... (that there's more) (Jazz in ROC, February 5-11, 2015)

Well, things appear to be picking up on the live jazz scene around Rochester, despite the snow and cold that are holding us in their clutches. I was beginning to worry...

Lots of great stuff around, so check something out (I aim to...).  As always, let me know if I missed something or have something wrong below.

Later note to our email subscribers (which is about to go out): I apologize for the delay (I have been so distracted by work and other issues that the listings email didn't go out since the January 21st listings posts).  I had tried something new and, obviously, it didn't work.  I think I have fixed it now, but you may receive the January 28th post in addition to this one and this one is a day late.
