A new club with an old name is bringing more ... jazz in Rochester, January 28-February 3
January 27, 2016
It's not every day (or year ... or years) that a new club intending to present live jazz comes around in the Rochester area. In fact, I can count them on one hand since I arrived here in 2002. Well, there is a new one, that harkens back to an old one—a legendary jazz club here in ROC, the Pythodd. Once located in Corn Hill on Clarissa Street (alas it is a parking lot now), the Pythodd was, as Alan Morrell put it in the D&C this summer, "a vibrant part of a thriving neighborhood, a stop on the 'jazz circuit' with a scruffy façade and a bona fide bebop vibe" (check out the whole D&C article, as well as Tina DaCosta Chapman's video Remembering the Pythodd, for more of the club's history). It has a deep legacy here in Rochester.
The new Pythodd Jazz Room is located in Charlotte (down near the lake at 4705 Lake Ave, close to Mr. Dominics). The owner Tyrone Ashford is trying to create a similar vibe to the Pythodd of before, with a focus on presenting local jazz musicians. The opening was tonight with a group from Eastman School of Music (Wednesday will regularly present jazz groups from Eastman). There are some more gigs below. All shows are free and start at 7:30 pm. I hope to get out there soon and hope you do, too. Do I have to tell you that we need to support this kind of thing...?
Yesterday, the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival announced four of the headliners for its 15th Edition running from June 24th through July 2nd: Chick Corea Trilogy Trio with special guest Joey Alexander, Chris Botti, Grace Potter and Erykah Badu. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 29th at 10:00 am through the XRIJF website or by calling (585) 454-2060.
After the "fold" (click the link if there is one for you) you will find the next seven days of live jazz in and around Rochester. Let me know if any regular gigs below are no longer happening or if you have heard of anything that's not in the listings. Check back later in the week for stragglers.
