The listings are still kind of light this week, but that's not too unusual this time of year. It's cold out there! I'm still recovering from a concussion after last week's icy Tuesday (amazed I was able to do the post last week... much better today!). I'm hoping to get out on Sunday to hear Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at Lovin Cup. Say hi if you see me!

It's light this week. Good thing as I'm limited due to a bump on my noggin after a fall on yesterday's ice and staring at the computer screen is no fun. By the way, last week I was too optimistic about the transition of ownership of the Pythodd Jazz Room in Charlotte being sold. Since then I've heard that the space is probably going to become a Mexican restaurant and likely will not be presenting jazz.  Oh well... like I said then, perhaps more about this later... Let me know if you've heard differently.

While right after the holidays is often light, the few gigs around over the next seven days reminds me how hard it is out there to present live jazz. We're seeing less and possibly more of it around ROC right now (perhaps more about this later).  Some of you may have heard that the Pythodd Jazz Room in Charlotte has closed. While that is true (explaining why there are no listings below), it appears from a note on their website that there are new owners of the club and the closure may be temporary.  On the plus side, the Brass Bar & Lounge on Alexander and East in the city is starting a Friday jazz happy hour beginning this Friday. Support live jazz by getting out to hear some (OK, OK, I have to get out more too....).

Jazz 90.1 top has listed its 100 top Cds for 2016 (pdf). What was your favorite new jazz CD in 2016?  

Eastman School of Music has announced that jazz keyboardist Gary Versace has joined the faculty of their  Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department. Hope to hear more from this great musician in ROC as a result?
