RIJF suspends ticket and Club Pass sales for the time being, just in case...

image from www.jazzrochester.comIn case you haven't already heard, CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival producers Marc Iacona and John Nugent announced this update on March 18th (sorry about the delay):

With the continued heightened concern over the coronavirus pandemic and the rapidly evolving decisions being announced by government and health officials, we are all experiencing significant disruption in all aspects of our lives.

With concern for everyone’s financial situation, we feel it best at this time to temporarily suspend ticket sales for headliner concerts and Club Passes until May 10.

As we announced yesterday, we are not canceling our festival. We are still planning for and hoping to present our festival from June 19-27. We will advise everyone of our festival plans on or before May 10. We thank you for your understanding and support. Be safe and keep healthy.

A prudent move in this time of swiftly moving change.  Fingers crossed....

The Rochester International Jazz Festival is a go ... for now

Today, the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival announced online that they are moving forward to present nine days of jazz and other music from June 19-27. The festival will go forward in 21 Venues (including the return of the former Xerox Auditorium), with 335+ concerts and over 100 free shows and other events. Free music will include Taj Mahal, Kool and the Gang, the Allman Betts Band, and Tommy Emmanuel. Trombone Shorty has been added for the first time in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. Yes, the producers know that there is a big question mark hanging over the festival with the spread of the coronavirus and COVID-19 in the Rochester area. They released a video statement about that.

Optimism is a good thing these days. I'll get into more details about the festival in the meantime and keep you updated here and in JazzRochester's other channels as we travel through this new normal over the next months.  Stay well and we'll get through this...

JazzRochester In the Time of Coronavirus

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay. After the state announced that bars and restaurants throughout New York will be restricted to takeout and delivery as of 8:00 pm tonight, it became clear that the fight against community spread of the c0ronavirus would wipe out the rest of the jazz gigs in and around Rochester and our weekly posting of listings for the week would thus be an exercise in futility.  So I am putting the listings posts on hiatus until such a time that things, I hope, return to whatever our new normal will be. I will also post about developments regarding the Rochester International Jazz Festival (the lineup of which is being announced tomorrow... I think).  You can assume that everything on that list below has been cancelled or postponed.

In the meantime, I'll try to write some posts about rebuilding a community of jazz listeners in Rochester to support local and other jazz musicians after the time of Coronavirus, and about innovative ways that jazz musicians and venues are getting their music out while maintaining social distance.

Stay well...

Look for the + for new gigs or changes to existing gigs made after the initial publication of the post (if you're receiving by email, we can't update the email, but will let you know of major corrections). As always, let me know if any repeating gigs below are no longer happening, or if I got something wrong of a gig that is.

MARCH 16 UPDATE: You can assume that ALL of the gigs in this post are have been cancelled or postponed after Monday's announcement that bars and restaurants must close except for takeout and delivery to combat community spread of the coronavirus.  Many of them had already taken that step.
