While we click off the days until the holidays and the snow spreads more thickly, there is some jazz out there for you.  And if you're thinking more about the warmer months, the folks over at the Rochester International Jazz Festival have announced the first two headliners for the 2024 RIJF and, lo and behold, they are actually jazz acts—Grammy-winning vocalist Samara Joy and guitarist Lee Ritenour with Bill Evans and Randy Brecker.  Also, note that I've added a date in February for Joshua Redman Group with Gabrielle Cavassa, who will bring some heat at the historic Hochstein School of Music's Performance Hall.

As we get into the holiday season, things slow down jazz-wise around here. As we get less light, the opportunities for hearing live jazz are also light. A lot more private gigs for the musicians, fewer opportunities at venues, etc.  Or at least that's how it seems now.  Despite asking, I have not received any notice from artists or venues for gigs in January.  Those should start to filter in soon . . . I hope.  Nonetheless, it's the holiday season and I hope you and yours are fully engaged in merriment, with jazz or not.

Fairport's Canal Days is coming soon on June 2-4. Spread out over the village of Fairport, Tim Forster and the others responsible for the music at FCD usually serve up a healthy helping of jazz from local musicians and often describe it as the "jazz festival before the jazz festival."  If we get good weather, this is a great place to hang and hear some great music and stretch those RIJF muscles a bit (it's only 3 weeks away!). Although Facebook keeps reminding me that cold is not out of the ordinary, even this late, I'm getting a bit tired of it.  Tonight I'm publishing a little late as I was at an "influencer" event at the new jazz venue in Rochester, Astor on Main.  Good food, craft cocktails, new friends and some live jazz guitar by El Rojo Jazz. Most of my new friends were food folks. Looking forward to more at this venue.

As we wind up Jazz Appreciation Month, I would like to make a suggestion for the last day of the month, April 30th. Check out the International Jazz Day global concert. This year's concert includes jazz artists from 13 global cities hosted by Herbie Hancock and including Dianne Reeves, Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Somi, Melody Gardot, Sérgio Mendes, Cyrille Aimée, Antonio Sánchez, John Beasley and many more. It will be webcast worldwide starting at 4 pm EDT on jazzday.com, the International Jazz Day YouTube and Facebook channels, and other outlets.  It's always a great concert.

Even though I'm out of town for a while longer, it's good to know there's still some live jazz back home. The big thing is not here in Rochester, but down in the town of Geneva, at the 1st Annual Scott Lafaro Geneva Jazz Fest 2023. Many of the artists playing during this xix day fest are local, so if you can get down there you can see a lot of jazz in a lot of cool venues.
